macOS: Login issues on a CSCC owned Mac

Why can't I log in to my Mac?

If you are having login issues on a Columbus State owned Mac, try the following things:
Note: you may need to bring the device on campus for resolution.

Try an old password

If you changed your password while off campus, the Mac might not have updated to the new one.

To ensure password changes sync properly in the future, update your password while your computer is connected to Columbus State's Virtual Private Network (VPN).

FileVault Recovery

What is FileVault?

FileVault encrypts the data on your startup disk so that unauthorized users can’t access your information without your password ore recovery key. See How does FileVault encryption work?

The recovery key will be automatically stored for you by Columbus State's Mac-management software, Jamf. If you ever need the recovery key, call the IT Support Center to retrieve your recovery key.

Enter the FileVault recovery key or admin password

  1. Reboot your computer while holding down command + R to boot to macOS Recovery Mode.
  2. Log in with admin account or click Forgot all passwords at the bottom and enter the recovery key.

  3. Open Terminal, type: resetpassword

  4. Enter the Recovery key if prompted
  5. Set your password to match your current Columbus State password.

Bring your laptop to campus

If you're still having issues logging in, contact IT Support to schedule a time to bring in your laptop, or bring it in anytime during walk-in support hours. See the IT Help Home page for contact information, hours, and location.
