What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chatbot created by OpenAI. It can have text-based conversations with you and answer questions based on information it has been given.
Be careful, because sometimes it "hallucinates" information that's not true and presents it as fact.
Using ChatGPT
- Go to chat.openai.com and sign up for a free account.
- Type your writing prompt in the Message ChatGPT box.
- Wait a few moments while ChatGPT writes its response.
Specify certain parameters
If you're looking for something specific, you can ask ChatGPT to alter its response to follow specified parameters.
For example, you can ask it to:
- Use a certain number of words
- Write at a certain age or education level
- Make the writing sound more informal
- Insert some humor
- try again if you don't like what it writes the first time.
How can students use ChatGPT?
Students can use ChatGPT in various ways to enhance their academic experience and beyond. Here are some ideas:
Time Management
- Get tips on effective time management and productivity.
- Create to-do lists or schedules by discussing your priorities with ChatGPT.
Idea Generation
- Brainstorm ideas for projects, presentations, or research topics.
- Explore new areas of interest by discussing related concepts with ChatGPT.
Study Aid
- Ask questions related to your coursework for clarification.
- Request explanations for complex concepts in a more digestible format.
- Seek additional information on topics you're studying.
Language Learning
- Practice and improve your language skills through conversations.
- Receive assistance with grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction.
Career Guidance
- Discuss career-related questions and get advice on job searches.
- Practice for interviews by simulating conversations with ChatGPT.
Remember, while ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it is important to verify critical information, and not solely rely on the responses from the model, which can sometimes contain incorrect information.
Academic integrity
It is important to approach the use of ChatGPT with a sense of responsibility and ethical awareness. Students should use technology tools in ways that align with legal and ethical standards and contribute positively to their learning experiences.
Always adhere to Columbus State policies regarding AI usage and academic integrity. See Guidance on use of generative AI technologies for more information on allowable use, prohibited use, and AI use in the classroom.
NEVER use ChatGPT to:
- Cut and paste content into assignments (without proper citation)
- Answer questions on exams or quizzes
Doing these things would be considered plagiarism or cheating and goes against academic integrity policies.
Will my instructor know if I cut and paste from ChatGPT
Probably. AI does not sound exactly like a human and sometimes it's obvious AI was used to generate writing. Even if your instructor doesn't spot it, there are AI detectors that instructors use to identify AI writing.
When in doubt, ask your instructor how you are allowed to use AI, such as ChatGPT, in your class.
