What is a screenshot?

A screenshot captures a portion of your screen and saves it as an image file. It is like taking a picture of your computer screen, but with much better quality than pulling out your phone to take a picture.

Taking screenshots can be a very effective way of showing an instructor or support person an issue that you are having on your computer.

How to take a screenshot

Windows

Snipping Tool

Windows has a build in application called Snipping Tool for taking screenshots.

Capture any of the following types of snips:

Type of snip	Details
Free-form snip	Draw a free-form shape around an object.
Rectangular snip	Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangle.
Window snip	Select a window, such as a dialog box, that you want to capture.
Full-screen snip	Capture the entire screen.

How to capture a snip

In Snipping Tool, select Mode. In earlier versions of Windows, select the arrow next to the New button.
Next, choose the kind of snip you want, then the whole screen change slightly to gray.
Then, select the area of your screen that you want to capture.

How to save a snip

After you capture a snip, select the Save Snip button.
In the Save As box, type a file name, location, and type, and then select Save.

Mac

You can capture the entire screen or just a portion of the screen.

How to take a full-screenshot on your Mac

To take a screenshot of the whole screen, press and hold these three keys together: Shift, Command, and 3.
If you see a thumbnail in the corner of your screen, click it to edit the screenshot. Or wait for the screenshot to save to your desktop.

How to capture a portion of the screen

Press and hold these three keys together: Shift, Command, and 4.
Drag the crosshair to select the area of the screen to capture. To move the selection, press and hold Space bar while dragging. To cancel taking the screenshot, press the Esc (Escape) key.
To take the screenshot, release your mouse or trackpad button.
If you see a thumbnail in the corner of your screen, click it to edit the screenshot. Or wait for the screenshot to save to your desktop.

Where to find screenshots

By default, screenshots save to your desktop with the name ”Screen Shot [date] at [time].png.”

In macOS Mojave or later, you can change the default location of saved screenshots from the Options menu in the Screenshot app. You can also drag the thumbnail to a folder or document.

Chromebook

How to take a full-screenshot on your Chromebook

Press Ctrl + Show windows at the same time (everything on-screen will be in your screenshot).
When the notification appears, click to see your screenshot, or find it in your Files app.
