How to Decrypt an Email

Summary

How to read an encrypted message from a Columbus State email address

Body

What is email encryption?

When sensitive information is detected in an email sent from a Columbus State account to an external recipient, the email will be automatically encrypted. Which means the recipient will need to enter a one-time code (from a separate email) to decrypt and view the message.

How to decrypt and read the email

  1. The external recipient will receive an email letting them know they have an encrypted message like below:
arrow pointing to blue button that says "read the message"
  2. Click Read the message - a new page will load:
Arrow pointing to button that says "Sign in with a one-time passcode"
  3. Click Sign in with a One-time passcode - A passcode will be sent to the same email address that the encrypted email was sent to.

  4. Retrieve that 8 digit code from your email, then go back to the page requesting the passcode and paste in the 8 digit code.

  5. The encrypted email will now open.
